The young scientists’ board In 2004 the young scientists’ board renews its work. The purpose of its organization is to combine scientific youth, to involve into scientific and social life of the institute, to embody its professional interests and to solve the main social problems. This board coordinates the works of young scientists and specialists at the age of 35, being workers or graduate students of the Institute. In 2009 the board’s membership contains 17 young workers including 6 candidates of science. Annually the board organizes celebration of the Science Day. In this day they arrange: - Scientific-educational seminars in comprehensive schools, vocational schools and gymnastics of the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. - “roundtable” discussions. Here pupils and young scientists presents results of their scientific works, exchange ideas. - Excursions. Here there is introduction with labs, herbarium, mineralogical offices and library of the Institute. The members of the Board take part in arrangement of the Institute’s conferences, herewith its main role is in arrangement of youth scientific conferences and in preparation and holding scientific seminars in the Institute. The young scientists and the workers of the Institute, invited lectors from leading scientific centers of the country present their reports on these seminars. Also lectures in regime of videoconference are held by this board. The board takes part in the program of improving living conditions, involves students of the Sakhalin Institutes in field works. Young scientists take part in sport competitions as inside the Institute as with other organizations. In 2009 the young scientists’ board held act “Help for children” in the Institute. On money collected there were bought toys and necessary things for children from children's home. In June 2009 within the framework of IV Sakhalin youth scientific school there was field volcanological excursion to Kunashir Island (the Southern Kuril Islands). Within 11 days being in this Island, there were visits to Columnar cape, geothermal electric power station, solfatara fields and thermal springs of such volcanoes as Mendeleev’s and Golovnin’s, also there were excursions to the seismic stations and museum of local lore, history and economy in Kunashir Island.
