The Institute of Marine Geology and Geophysics is one of the oldest foundations of academic science in Far Eastern region. Its history is related to establishing of Sakhalin scientific research base of AS USSR in 1946 in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk.  Three years later this research base was re-organized into Sakhalin department of Academy of Science.  The Institute received its current title after several reorganizations by the decision of the Presidium of the AS USSR in subsequent years. The IMGG today is the based research subdivision in Far Eastern Federal District and Russian Federation in the field of investigations of global problems of Pacific Geology, and Geodynamic processes forming the exterior and the internal structure of our planet. The Sakhalin research center of Far Eastern branch of Russian Academy of science

During more than 60 years the Institute of Marine Geology and Geophysics succeeded in solving a number of prime scientific and technology tasks, and developed research grounds (“the fundamental”) for subsequent progress in geological and geophysical works at water areas.  The unique information on the peculiarities of deep and surface geological structure of numerical bodies was received, to have knowledge of principles of evolution of transition zone from Eurasia to Pacific Ocean. New research technique and methods, and test instruments and apparatus were designed. The works to improve these units and methods are in progress.  The scientific library was created, which funds are of great value for scientists and the general public.

Presently, 1 corresponding member of RAS, 10 Doctors of Science and 25 Candidates of Science work at the institute. The work for personnel training is in progress; the post-graduate study being effective. All this enable us to see optimistically on the role and prospects of the institute in the further geological and geophysical investigations of the Great Ocean.
